Local government councillors in Katsina State have been reminded of their constitutional duty to fight corruption and ensure accountability at the grassroots.
Speaking at the 2025 Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Sensitization Campaign for the state’s 361 ward councillors, Special Adviser on Local Government Inspectorate, Lawal Rufa’i Safana, said the councillors are “the foot soldiers of the Anti-Corruption Commission.”
“Whoever is expected to make laws and provide oversight is also expected to prevent corruption. That is precisely why local government councillors are here today,” Safana told the gathering on Thursday.
He stressed that democracy depends on effective legislative oversight, warning that when councillors neglect their roles, the system becomes weakened.
“The difference between a democratic government and a non-democratic one lies in the legislature and that legislature is you, the councillors,” he said.
Safana noted that councillors are not only lawmakers but also custodians of accountability at the local level, responsible for monitoring budgets, demanding transparency in revenue and expenditure, and safeguarding governance against abuse.
He described the sensitisation campaign as a timely and strategic initiative that strengthens the commission’s work and equips councillors to confront corruption head-on.
